BRUXISM

Bruxism is the behavior of involuntarily jaw clenching or grinding teeth for a long time during the day. This condition usually increases during sleep and its intensity may vary depending on the stress level. The severity of the disease increases with the strengthening of the chewing muscle (muscles of mastication).

Pain may occur on the muscles of mastication (chewing) and at the level of the jaw joint. In later periods, pain can also be observed on the temples, neck and shoulder. It is usually severe in the morning hours. There may also be pain and a clicking sound in the joints during mouth opening and closing movements. Loosening, abrasions and fractures can be seen in the teeth. Due to these conditions, tooth sensitivity may develop.

What are the treatment options for bruxism?

The mouth guard/splint, known as protective bite plate can be prepared or botox can be applied to the muscles of mastication in order to relax the chewing muscle and eliminate the complaints. Depending on the level of the discomfort, muscle relaxants or psychotherapy may be required. In severe conditions, it may be necessary to wash the inflammation out of the joint.
